The Calvary Players

“We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.” – Col. 1:28

Calvary Chapel of Olympia's drama ministry, the Calvary Players, has a twofold purpose: to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and illustrate His teachings to the body of believers; and to proclaim His message of salvation to the world.

We do this by presenting sketches and plays during regular church services and other special occasions, and by offering 3 or 4 full length plays per year.

The sketches presented during church services are designed to help illustrate or expand upon the teachings presented in the service, or sometimes to help announce special events.

There are two types of plays we produce. Twice a year we present plays with a strong gospel message, usually during Christmas and Easter. These plays offer free admission to the church and the general public. The second type of play we produce tends to be more well known to the public outside the church, examining issues with which all people wrestle. These plays may or may not be evangelistic in theme or even Christian in nature; but they do present Judeo-Christian values in a positive light. They are sometimes followed up with a brief (about five minutes) commentary offering up the themes of the play for examination. These are usually presented as dessert theaters at the church or outreach events at the Washington Center, and the congregation is encouraged to invite their friends and family to an evening of non-threatening entertainment designed to encourage further introspection and discussion.

We also occasionally go outside of the church for outreach, and we are currently working to develop and expand this area of the ministry.

We have the opportunity to involve many different types of people with a variety of talents in Calvary Players, both on stage and behind the scenes. Toward this end, we conduct ongoing training and workshops to equip our members to minister effectively through drama, and to grow in their craft and in their relationship with God.
